Due Diligence: This home was built circa 1853 for James Parke Corbin, a member of an old Virginia landowning family, as a Greek Revival version of a 1740s house the family had owned in another area. The newer home later became the site of Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Civil War winter headquarters in 1862. Known as Moss Neck Manor, it's a Virginia Historical Landmark and listed on the U.S. Department of Interior's list of National Historic Places. Owner Howard Stahl, a Washington, D.C., attorney, bought the home in 1998 for about $1 million and says he spent more than $2 million on an 18-month restoration of the property. The home, which is an unusual 225 feet long, has an updated kitchen and baths, but everywhere else the rooms have been restored to the Civil War era. Doorknobs used by Confederate troops are still in place, as are elaborate plaster moldings decorating the 12-to-17-foot ceilings. Mr. Stahl says he's planning to move out of state.
