From The Wall Street Journal Online

[House of the Week]

Where: Seattle

Amenities: Two-level home near Puget Sound. Den, rooftop terrace, garden

Asking Price: $990,000

Opening Bid*: $895,000

Agent: Scott and Molly Shutes, Windermere Real Estate/Oak Tree Inc. 206-527-5250

Due Diligence: Built in 2002 by local architect Robert Bruckner and his wife Megan, this home stands just north of downtown Seattle, in the city's Magnolia district. The neighborhood, set off by three bridges, is known for expensive homes with sweeping views. The Bruckners bought the land in 2001, razing the small cottage that had been on the property. Located about 800 feet from Puget Sound, the home has 15-foot-high ceilings, with large glass walls throughout (except the bathrooms). The transparent features allow the main rooms to absorb sunlight, something at a premium in Seattle, Mr. Bruckner says. An interior ship's ladder leads to a roof deck that has unobstructed western views of the sound. The kitchen's open design has cherry wood floors and cabinetry and an island stove. The entryway features a multi-colored glass chandelier designed by New York artist Joe McDonnell.

*The opening bid is Weekend Journal's estimate of a reasonable starting point for negotiations to buy the property, based on past sales, prevailing market conditions and interviews with local real-estate experts.
