[House of the Week]

What: Two-story shingle-style home with six bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms in 5,300 square feet on five acres.

Where: Bridgehampton, N.Y.

Amenities: Heated gunite swimming pool, guest house with one bedroom, one bath; four fireplaces (one outdoor), living room with 24-foot ceiling, French doors. A pool house has a bathroom and kitchenette.

Asking Price: $4.2 million

Opening Bid*: $3.9 million

Listing Agent: Jill Shamoon of Corcoran, 631-537-6900 ext. 304

Due Diligence: This home, built in 2002, sits on one of the highest points on eastern Long Island (and near properties owned by the actor Kevin Sorbo and ABC News anchor Peter Jennings). The owners, Jill and David Shamoon, originally built the house as an investment property. But, after selling a small home they owned next to the property, they made the new home their main residence. Designed by Barnes Coy Architects, noted for Contemporary Hamptons homes, the house has a staircase that leads to a rooftop belvedere with a bar and ocean views. Bridgehampton is in the midst of a building boom amid soaring Hamptons prices. Buyers bought 54 Hamptons homes priced at $5 million or above last year, up from 29 in 2003, according Corcoran broker Diane Saatchi.

*The opening bid is Weekend Journal's estimate of a reasonable starting point for negotiations to buy the property, based on past sales, prevailing market conditions and interviews with local real-estate experts.
