Due Diligence: In 1997, Martha Dumont left New York and came back to her home state of Maine to raise her three children. In New York, she had worked for Lehman Brothers for 14 years, including a stint as director of fixed-income research. When she purchased this waterfront residence in 1997 for $1.1 million, it measured less than half the square footage it has now. "I basically built a new home," says the 47-year-old Ms. Dumont, who also owns and operates the Chebeague Island Inn, a 21-room hotel and restaurant nearby. Cumberland Foreside, a centuries-old enclave with upscale homes, is part of the town of Cumberland, with a population of about 1,200. Renovations, completed in 2000, added marble and limestone baths, central air conditioning and an indoor spa. Ms. Dumont also added antique fixtures, taken from an 1825 townhouse she once owned in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ms. Dumont says she's selling the home because it's bigger than she needs, now that her children have gone off to college.
