Due Diligence: Joe Craven is the founder and president of Craven Inc., six small firms that manufacture and distribute lawn, gardening and home-décor products. He and his wife, Pam, purchased this property in 1980. For years it was used solely for horse and cattle ranching, but the couple completed a main house in 2000 at a cost of about $5.5 million. Mr. Craven, 58 years old, says the design was inspired by villas the couple admired during European travels. (The couple also owns homes in Italy, Mexico and Southern China, where Craven Inc., has offices.) The main residence, which sits at the end of a half-mile-long cobbled driveway, is surrounded by 1,398 acres of farmland, still used for horses and cattle. A two-story great hall, with 32-foot ceilings painted to depict the sky, leads to a stone terrace with views of the property and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. The main residence has a clay tile roof imported from Colombia, South America, black granite floors from Italy, and stone walls imported in sections from India.
