Due Diligence: Hal Kroeger, chairman of wealth-management firm Tower Hill, bought this property on Mount Desert Island along the eastern coast of Maine in 1996. He spent the next two years renovating it, including updating the plumbing, heating and cooling systems inside the three-story, 1905 shingle cottage. (His brother, Keith Kroeger, a New York architect, handled the renovation.) Mr. Kroeger, 65 years old, says the new heating system allows him to spend fall and winter weekends at the house. The home's interiors include antique fireplace mantels, intricate carved moldings, and Douglas fir flooring. A full-length outdoor porch overlooks Somes Sound. The property is about a mile from Bar Harbor, a tony village where "Law & Order" producer Dick Wolf and Martha Stewart own homes, and it's walking distance to Acadia National Park.
