Due Diligence: Former bank executive Steven Baker and his wife, Nan, had this two-story contemporary home built in 2002, on the coastline about six miles east of Waikiki. As a Citibank executive, Mr. Baker spent 20 years in such cities as Hong Kong and Jakarta, Indonesia -- stays that fueled his love of Asian design. The house mixes Balinese and Hawaiian styles, using African mahogany and hardwoods like the tropical Kwila and Brazil's Ipe. A natural spring-fed pond lies next to a large covered lanai and sunning deck with an outdoor full bath and shower. The master-bedroom suite measures 1,162 square feet. The couple paid about $1.5 million for the property in 1999 and spent an additional $5 million on construction, Mr. Baker adds. The 56-year-old owner, now a private investor, says he and his wife plan to build a new home in the area when this one sells.
