Due Diligence: This property in South Texas's Rio Grande Valley has operated as the Inn at Chachalaca since 1999. Guests have included former President Jimmy Carter and primatologist Jane Goodall, according to the owners, retired bank executive Cleve Breedlove and his wife, Rosemary. (They bought half of the land in 1972, half in 1997.) Though it can remain a working inn, the property is being marketed more as an single-family estate, says its listing agent. The two-story red-brick main house has covered wraparound porches, six bedroom suites, vaulted ceilings and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Servants' quarters, small office quarters and a one-bedroom, 2,800-square-foot owner's residence also sit on the property. It has river frontage and is surrounded by thick native brush and some wildlife, including 200 species of birds, according to Mr. Breedlove. (The lodge is popular with bird-watchers.)
