A single-story home ranks as very important among 58% of homebuyers 65 years old and older, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Here's a look at three one-story homes in active-adult communities.

PLACE/PRICE: Reno, Nev / $414,369

PROPERTY TAX*: $7,000 per year

THE PROPERTY: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths

DESCRIPTION: This 1,615-square-foot home features a two-car garage and den. There is a bay window in the master bedroom. Counters with a double-bowl sink separate the kitchen from the great room.

NOTABLE: This 2005 home is part of a golf community for people age 55-plus. By year's end, it will have a fitness center and pool. Association fees are about $1,500 annually.

PROPERTY TAX*: $3,413 per year

THE PROPERTY: 4 bedrooms, 2 baths

DESCRIPTION: This 2,592-square-foot home has a columned entryway, multi-level ceilings and recessed lighting. The family room, with fireplace, leads to a sun room and the kitchen has a breakfast bar.

NOTABLE: This 2003 brick home sits on a cul-de-sac and is steps from a community pool, tennis courts and a nature preserve. Association fees are $730 annually.
