About 160,000 single-family homes, including some mobile homes, have three to eight unrelated people living in them, reports the American Housing Survey. Some areas restrict the number to four or fewer. Here are three.

  • Black Jack, Mo.
  • Provo, Utah
  • South Riding, Va.

PLACE/PRICE: Black Jack, Mo./ $129,000

PROPERTY TAX*: $1,512 per year

THE PROPERTY: 4 bedrooms, 2 baths built in 1965

DESCRIPTION: Set on a cul de sac, this ranch with a 2-car garage, a covered porch and a formal living room, is an investment opportunity. There is a fifth bedroom in the full basement.

NOTABLE: On April 26, the city will consider revising its definition of family in an occupancy law after a mom, her three kids and her fiance violated an ordinance by living under one roof when they bought their home.

*Note: Current owner's payment.
