Homes in the Favorite Haunts
Of Demons, Witches and UFOs

These houses aren't haunted (as far as we know), but they are in places that have been put on the Halloween map, so to speak, by terrors, real or imagined. In our tribute to Halloween, here's a caboodle of homes in Amityville, N.Y., Salem, Mass., and Roswell, N.M.

  • Amityville, N.Y.
  • Salem, Mass.
  • Roswell, N.M.

PLACE/PRICE: Amityville, N.Y./$1.228 million

PROPERTY TAX*: $17,010

THE PROPERTY: A 3,000-square-foot residence with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, on .25 acres beside a wide canal.

DESCRIPTION: Not far from Great South Bay on Long Island's South Shore, this cul-de-sac property has 240 feet of bulkhead, space for multiple boats and a lighted boardwalk. The great room offers skylights and a slate floor with radiant heat. The grounds include a koi pond with stream and waterfall, and the house has an upstairs bedroom and bath with separate entrance.

NOTABLE: Amityville was the site of the murder of the entire Defeo family by Ronald Defeo in November 1974. Mr. Defeo confessed that demonic voices urged him to kill his parents and siblings. Both the movie and book, "The Amityville Horror," were re-released this year. The home is three blocks away from the house in which the murders occurred.
