Homes in States That Have
Relatively Low Tax Burdens
Where you reside is a significant factor in how much you pay in taxes each year. The Tax Foundation ranks U.S. states by tax burden, highest to lowest. Maine, New York and Hawaii top the list. Here's a look at homes in vacation locales in New Hampshire, Delaware and Tennessee, which take the third, fourth and fifth lowest spots on the list, above only Alaska and The District of Columbia.
- Gatlinburg, Tenn.
- Meredith, N.H.
- Dewey Beach, Del.
PLACE/PRICE: Gatlinburg, Tenn./$799,900
PROPERTY TAX*: $1,670
THE PROPERTY: A home at the end of a cul-de-sac with views of the Smoky Mountains. The 3,453-square-foot house has two bedrooms, three and one-half baths and a two-car garage on 1.1 acres.
DESCRIPTION: The residence has six outdoor decks and a screened-in porch that look out to mountain scenery. A glass-enclosed room on the third floor has 270-degree views of the Smokies. There is a sunroom, and the master suite has a stone fireplace, a sitting area, a private deck and a whirlpool tub.
NOTABLE: A main selling point of the home is its mountain vistas, says listing agent Jason White of Century 21 Four Seasons Realty of Gatlinburg, Tenn. "There are not a lot of vacant lots that have those kinds of views," he says. While the home hasn't had much in the way of significant improvements since it was built in 1990, it has been "very well maintained," he says. Home prices in the area have risen significantly in the past few years, he says, as baby boomers have discovered it as a vacation spot. "Three or four years ago, this home would have been a couple of thousand dollars less," he says.
