Index of Construction
Offers Gloomier Outlook

by From The Wall Street Journal Online
October 18, 2007

The Architecture Billings Index fell last month to 51.1 from 53.9 in August. The index is down significantly since its near historic high of 60 in July. The index is derived from a monthly survey of architectural firms by the American Institute of Architects. It is designed to forecast construction nine to 12 months away. Survey participants are asked whether their billings had increased, decreased or stayed the same in the month just ended. A score above 50 indicates an increase.
